#6…Productive Avoidance: doing something of value in order to neglect the other thing you should be doing with your time.
I especially use the PA strategy during office hours. (Shout out to my kindred spirit JS for this terminology.)
So that’s what it is called! I am really good at that. If only I could make a career out of it.
I can no longer support Rambling Ever On. They devalue the work of videographers and motion graphics artists by using free, generic, online services that promise good enough results but undermine the hard work and craftsmanship of professional video artists trying to scrape out a living in this field.
I fear this cost saving measure is a first step on a slippery slope toward the total buzzfeedification of REO as an entity. It is only a matter of time before unpaid interns will be ghost writing articles and “the fives” are outsourced to China.
If we (the REO staff) knew anyone with any skill in this area and who would be willing to do all of the work for free, we would undoubtedly ask them for help. I cannot stress that enough: if we knew ANYONE, worked with ANYONE, or were related to ANYONE that did work in video production and editing, we would reach out. posthaste.
In addition to what Phill said I would add that it would be great to be able to pay for professional video services, but we can’t afford it since REO only has five patrons. And what they give is only enough to cover some of Nathan’s costs to host this thing.
Sounds legit. I bet if GM knew ANYONE in the U.S. with any skill in the area of making cars who would be willing to do it for free, they would also reach out. Posthaste. And Nike probably thinks it would be great to be able to pay an American professional to make shoes and soccer balls, but shucks, they just can’t afford it.
I hope the REO staff remembers this day when they eventually want custom video work, because on that day all the video professionals will have starved to death. Better hope skeletons know their way around an editing bay.
Valid perspective.
I’ll tell you what, we are willing to take a look at submissions. No promises that we will use them, but we would absolutely welcome promotional videos about REO.
Invalid perspective, actually, since both GM and Nike sell a product and make money.
Incomparable.
I was talking about the skeletons. That seemed valid.
It’s always a good policy to take skeletons deadly seriously.
As long as your video people are being paid at a rate comparable to what you pay your writers, I’ve got not problem with it!
🙂
The laborer is worthy of his hire. Video is a worthwhile thing to pay for. So is writing. So is website creation. But in this case, I believe the labor is a labor of love, for video, writing, and site development. And that observation is worth double what you paid for it! Because it too was merely a labor of love.
Trust me, the rate is comparable.
Your double-rated check is in the mail Allan!
