I Care Too Much

I care too much…

I care too much about myself. My needs tend to come first far too often. Yes, I have been known to sacrifice my desires for the benefit of others, particularly my family, but if I am honest with myself, those sacrifices frequently become feathers in my cap and bolsters to my pride.

Lord, help me put the needs of others first more often than I do. Help me to live self-sacrificially, with a servant’s heart and spirit. Chip away at my pride, leaving me meek and mild to better reflect your light.

I care too much…

I care too much about my comfort. I love my lifestyle, my pace, my circle of friends and family. It bothers me when anyone or anything interrupts my carefully cultivated comfort. And while I push myself in discomfort’s direction at times, my tendency is to avoid it as much as possible.

Lord, make me uncomfortable. Stretch me in ways that will draw me closer to You. Push me to places and people that will challenge my physical, emotional, and spiritual comfort zones. Keep my contentment from becoming complacent.

I care too much…

I care too much about my opinion. I am not a fan of disagreement. I tell myself it is because I am not confrontational, but that only feels partially true. At my core, I think I am right most of the time and I hate it when my opinions are challenged. This often brings out the worst in me.

Lord, help me hold my opinions more loosely. Let them not define my character or my sense of worth. Help me cling to your Truth with everything that I am, but to better discern the difference between truth and personal opinion. Help me find my worth in who You are and what You have done.

I care too much…

I care too much about my people. My family. My friends. My church. These are the people that matter to me. And this can be a boon in my life, for it is good to love well those You have placed in my life. But this love can be a closed loop, making it impossible to invite anyone new into the circle. I keep too many people at arm’s length. I refuse to the love them as You love them.

Lord, break down my walls. Give me Your eyes so I can see every sacred soul the way You do. They are Image bearers. They were formed and fashioned with limitless care and tenderness. Who am I to withhold something as pure as love? Help me to live in obedience to Your Word and Your command to love them as I love myself.

I care too much…

I care too much about my reputation. I want to be seen as good, honest, and true. Often, my strongest motivator is how I will be perceived. My actions, my words, and my decisions are driven by an insatiable need to be validated and praised. Vanity is a poisonous impetus, a crippling stimulus. And I am vain more often than I care to admit.

Lord, crush my pride and vanity. Destroy my ego. Help me find motivation and fulfillment in You, and You alone. Left to my own devices, I am a wayward and prideful man. I ask that in Your endless love and grace You will gently rebuke my heart when I strive for vainglorious rewards. Help me to humbly accept that my soul will only find rest in You and that my grasping and clawing for earthly rewards will only lead to misery and emptiness.

I care too much…

I care too much about me.

Lord, guide me to Your Word when I am too focused on myself. Help me to live out the truth found in Your Word. Help me to walk in all Your ways, to love You, to serve You with all my heart and with all my soul. I will find no other contentment. No other joy. Lord, help me to daily confess like Peter that there is nowhere else for me to go. You have the words of eternal life, and I have believed, and have come to know, that You are the Holy One of God. Help me to find rest and purpose in only You.

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.
