Olympic Fever

Behind the scenes at REO we’ve had a running debate about the Olympics. Some of us love it (Josh, Nathan and Ben). Some of us are somewhat interested (Gowdy, Mark and Mike). And some of us would probably be okay if it didn’t exist at all (Phill). So, that got us thinking: What about our readers? Where do you stand when it comes to the Olympics? Are you a crazed fan, following every event? Are you a passive observer, picking a few events that really get your attention? Or are you like some of us and wish it would get over with quickly so football season would start?

Let us know in the poll and comment section below.

How do you feel about the Olympics?

I voted. I’m not a fan. There are a few events I will watch but most of it is pretty boring to me.

I love swimming and sprinting. My wife made me quasi interested in gymnastics. I love basketball but it’s a double edged sword. We should dominate the world but if we do it’s boring. If we dont, it’s exciting but disappointing. 2008 was about the perfect balance. 92 and 04 were the extremes.

  • I could be *more* interested if the Olympics didn’t suffer from such insufferable advertising hype and hypocrisy. Political correctness, anti-semitism, glossing over or ignoring the very real problems in Brazil (crime, etc.) for these games, not to mention items such as the 450,000 condoms distributed for free to the athletes, etc. I enjoy seeing good athletic performance, but the machine is no longer hidden, and that leaves me uninterested. On the other hand MLB and the NFL suffer from similar maladies….

It’s interesting that no one that voted “I LOVE IT!!!” has commented. I would love to hear what you love about it. Convince me that it’s worth it.

Fine, I’ll say something. Something. Kidding. I love it a good deal because I have always loved it. All of it. (Except for most of the opening and closing ceremonies.) But that nostalgic reason is only part of it. To me there is an inspiration and magic surrounding all the events. I never know what is going to be on when I turn on the tube. The other day I watched the steeplechase and open water swimming, I knew nothing about the first and didn’t even know the second existed. Still enjoyed them. I have yet to watch an Olympic sporting event that I don’t love watching.

I picked that I enjoy some of it. There is just something cool about watching the fastest people in the world race, whether it is on land or in the water.

It hasn’t happened as much this time around, but some of the swimming races in 08 and other years were so tight at the finish and/or featured a big comeback in a short amount of time. Those things are special. The year Phelps got 8 it was like a fiction writing.
