Noah in the Ark: Five Short Poems

I. The Agony of Grace

We are the human race;
our secluded
eyes, bleached faces,
crowd the spaces
where the water cages us
in cabins
of a divine embrace.

We are the human race;
secluded in vindicating cabins,
cabins of bleating,
cabins of beasts endlessly eating,
cabins of darkness,
cabins of our broken hearts a-beating.

We are the human race
and this,
this is the agony of grace.

II. The Waters of Iniquity

The washing of the waves,
the waves of sin,
the lot of us bathing in snowy skin.

This is where the waves
whisper of another world,

where the
waters of iniquity
whisper into our
unstable souls.

III. Recession

Today we are free,
today we
glow like the still
hills of earth,
running beyond
and already eroding.

IV. Progression

The moments
are melting,
ceaseless,
punctuated.

United,
they are a glacier,
ever sliding,
and
melting to a period.

V. The Waters of Grace

The waters,
they were wormy
and predestined,
vindicating the sod.

Sons and daughters,
there is redemption,
reconciliation,
and the love of God
waiting, waiting beyond the waters.

We wrote a tribute to him, but the best tribute you can give him would be to read all the wonderful poems, short stories, book reviews, theological essays, and ridiculous satire pieces he wrote for us. Pass them on to others and maybe allow Ben to inspire you to write something yourself.
