Songs of Truth, Beauty, and Joy: A Collaborative Playlist
The songs we listen to say a lot about who we are and what we value. While not every song needs to be a theological dissertation or even have a profound message, if our musical diet primarily consists of empty frivolity or worse, it could have devastating consequences on our souls. Self-control and discernment matter in more ways than just diet and daily habits.
To that end, last week we asked for your help, and you came through! We posed a pretty simple question, but one with the potential to reveal a lot about each person who answered.
Submit one song that speaks to the true, the beautiful, and the joyful in life. The songs do not have to be overtly Christian, but they should embody the words of Paul from his letter to the Philippians.
Once we receive enough contributions, we will create the playlist and share it on all of our social media platforms. We might even turn it into an article.
Thanks in advance. We can’t wait to hear your songs!
The suggested songs have ranged from The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir to R.E.M. Styles as varied as dance pop to indie rock. There are songs celebrating the simple joy of living (“Brand New” by Ben Rector), songs diving deep into pure romantic love (“At My Most Beautiful” by R.E.M.), and songs longing for the new creation (“Green Again” by Benjamin Daniel). A song based on an old Bonhoffer hymn (“By Gracious Powers” by John Van Deusen) and a crowd-pleasing worship anthem (“Multiplied” by NEEDTOBREATHE).
We absolutely love the eclectic nature of the playlist. It’s weird and quirky, which fits in perfectly with the Rambling Ever On ethos. Our guiding principle is to celebrate the true, the beautiful, and the joyful. And while there is no singular theme that connects all of these songs, each in their own way point to the things that make our site what it is and they shine a light on the things that matter most in life. We think that is beautiful.
As Paul said in Philippians 4: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” We believe this playlist embodies that spirit well. If you listen closely, you will find things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and worthy of praise. Listen to these songs and ponder them deep in your heart. The best sort of songs are not just the ones that get stuck in your head. The best sort of songs get stuck in your soul.
A Final Word on the Songs Submitted:
We received responses on multiple social media platforms, and we did our best to include every submission. (If we missed any, please let us know in the comments.) We’ve added a handful of songs to fill up the corners and to create some transitional moments. It’s not a long playlist, clocking in at less than 70 minutes, but we feel its brevity lends more weight and importance to each song. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we have. We promise, this won’t be the last time we do this so keep your eyes open.
