20 Underrated Switchfoot Songs
Several years ago, I wrote an article analyzing Switchfoot’s discography up to that point. Each album was given a grade of “overrated,” “underrated,” or “properly rated.” This gimmick was really just an excuse for me to write about Switchfoot and discuss their albums.
The criteria for my rankings were not scientific. I considered the popularity of each album, checked the critical reaction, and tried to gauge the fan consensus and see how it matched up to my feelings about each record. In other words, it was mostly vibes!
The Beautiful Letdown, the band’s most popular album BY FAR, was given a grade of “overrated.” Not because I don’t like the album, but because I don’t like it quite as much as most people seem to. Oh Gravity, an album that wasn’t nearly as well received as The Beautiful Letdown, was given a grade of “underrated,” not because I necessarily think it is one of their best, but because I don’t think it’s one of their worst.
My rankings, especially when I called certain albums “overrated,” did not sit well with some Switchfoot fans. So, this time around we are going to take the approach of Christian radio and be more positive, encouraging, and safe for the whole family!
For this article, we will feature a list of 20 underrated Switchfoot songs. My methods this time are based on hard data and not vibes and anecdotes. In other words, a decent amount of math was involved in the compiling of this list.
First, I looked at each album and the total number of plays it had on Spotify. I divided this number by the number of songs on the album to get an average number of plays per song. For those interested here are those numbers:
Legend of Chin – 1.93 million average number of Spotify plays per song
New Way to Be Human – 3.85 million
Learning to Breathe – 8.63 million (This number is boosted substantially by “Dare You To Move.”)
The Beautiful Letdown – 25 million
Nothing is Sound – 2.66 million
Oh! Gravity – 2.10 million
Hello Hurricane – 6.13 million
Vice Verses – 4.55 million
Fading West – 5.72 million
Where the Light Shines Through – 5.23 million
Native Tongue – 4.59 million
Interrobang – 1.285 million
Forever Now – 450 thousand (This album was released earlier this year, so it is unfair to compare this one to the rest since it hasn’t had time to accumulate as many plays.)
Next, I selected the songs for the playlist. To be eligible a song could not be in the top 4 most played songs on any album. Once the top 4 for each album were eliminated from consideration, I selected 20 songs that I feel deserve more love from the fans. These are also songs that I happen to really like. Certain songs are avoided by fans because they aren’t very good, but others get overlooked despite being good songs. These would all fall in the second group.
A couple of caveats and we will get to the list. First, I only included songs on the original release of each album. Additional tracks on deluxe versions and live versions of songs were not considered. Neither were remixes. Second, their Christmas album was not evaluated for this list. Finally, all Spotify numbers were as of late July 2026. If you read this 3 years from now and a particular song has taken off to become a hit for the band, just know that it was not always popular, and this article was probably the reason for the jump in popularity!
Here is the list. The order presented is the order of the playlist; this isn’t a ranking from 20-1.
Needle and Haystack Life (2009)
- Spotify plays – 3.3 million
- Rank on album – 8th
This is the best song on my favorite Switchfoot album. They don’t have a better opener in their catalog.
Head over Heels (In This Life) (2006)
- Spotify plays – 1.5 million
- Rank on album – 5th
Overlooked song on an overlooked album.
Happie is a Yuppie Word (2005)
- Spotify plays – 1.7 million
- Rank on album – 6th
This may be the only song Jon Foreman growls at the beginning of. It’s definitely the only Switchfoot song based on a mash up of a Bob Dylan quote and the book of Ecclesiastes.
Underwater (1997)
- Spotify plays – 473K
- Rank on album – 5th
Love the jazzy piano interlude in this one and the drum fill at the end is also great.
Edge of My Seat (1997)
- Spotify plays – 366K
- Rank on album – 10th
I’ll be the first to admit that I like the band’s debut album more than most, but how does this song have so few plays compared to everything else the band has done?!?!
Back to the Beginning Again (2014)
- Spotify plays – 2.4 million
- Rank on album – 10th
I have to believe this song is overlooked because it is the last track on the album. That is the only logical explanation!
Selling the News (2011)
- Spotify plays – 1.9 million
- Rank on album – 11th
Jon Foreman kinda sorta raps on this song. I’m glad he doesn’t do that often, but the lyrics and intensity of the song make this one a memorable track. The theme of this song has aged particularly well.
Playing for Keeps (2000)
- Spotify plays – 756K
- Rank on album – 8th
Learning to Breathe is NOT my favorite album, but it features several solid songs, and this is one of the best.
Broken Wings (2026)
- Spotify plays – 235K
- Rank on album – 8th
It’s almost definitely too early to call this song underrated, but it is 8th (out of 13 songs) on the new album which means it’s trending that way. It’s my favorite from Forever Now, and these types of anthems are exactly why I like Switchfoot so much.
Sooner or Later (Soren’s Song) (1999)
- Spotify plays – 909K
- Rank on Album – 5th
You knew Jon Foreman had more to say than the average songwriter when he referenced Kierkegaard and Augustine on the band’s sophomore release. The bridge of this song is what I’m here for.
Splinter (2022)
- Spotify plays – 656K
- Rank on album – 9th
2022’s Interrobang was an interesting musical turn for the band. “Splinter” is one of the more overlooked songs on the record and one of the best.
Souvenirs (2011)
- Spotify plays – 3.1 million
- Rank on album – 8th
Songs like this are the reason this playlist exists. So good.
Hope is the Anthem (2016)

- Rank on album – 9th
My heart is beating like a blown speaker
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weaker
A distortion pedal and a pair of wings
And an anthem played on broken strings
Life and Love and Why (1997)

Another banger from their debut.
The Loser (2000)

- Rank on album – 6th
Love the guitar intro.
The Hardest Art (2019)

Switchfoot doesn’t have a “club” song, but if they did it would be this one.
We are One Tonight (2005)

I’ve liked this song since hearing the album 20 years ago, but it’s been in the last couple months that I really started to fully appreciate its greatness.
Sing it Out (2009)

Red Eyes (2009)

The least played song on the band’s best album. This song is the inspiration for this article and playlist.
Twenty-four (2003)
- Spotify plays – 6.8 million
- Rank on album – 6th
In the context of their entire discography this song is not underrated. It has double the number of Spotify plays of any other song on this list and more than 10 times the plays of a few of these songs! That being said, there are five songs on The Beautiful Letdown with more plays! I believe if work together we change that!
